Why you’re honoring this graduate:
“Ada Neri Curiel, otherwise known as Nelly by her peers, has been an active member of La Union del Pueblo Entero (LUPE) since 2010. Originally from Mexico, Nelly immigrated to the Texas border region seeking a better future for herself and her children.
“Nelly is a proud stay-at-home mom and is happy to contribute to her colonia (communities along the U.S.-Mexico border), her organization and the community of the Lower Rio Grande Valley (LRGV). She and her family reside in the Colonia Goolie Meadows, close to the city of Donna.
“Nelly heads a committee in her colonia and is leading the efforts to implement a pilot program for public lighting for the Colonia Goolie Meadows.
“Through her participation in several programs offered by LUPE, Nelly has developed tremendous public speaking skills, confidence in herself and a passion for education. Nelly successfully completed her cosmetology program at MEI Academy of Cosmetology in the city of Donna.
“She is currently working on her hours to get licensed by the state. She aspires to continue on to earn more certificates and to one day open her own beauty salon. Nelly’s eldest son is approaching high school graduation, and she actively encourages his dream to pursue higher education.
“It is with great honor that I nominate Ada Neri Curiel to be recognized for her achievements and earning her certificate in cosmetology in 2015. Si se puede!”
