This morning, as we talked about planning and preparation for one of next year's many commemorations in Birmingham--the contribution of the Foot Soldiers, several people lamented that too many do not know the history. Thank you, Sophia, for sharing this remembrance--and for linking the past to the current 'troubles.' I'm adding Mr. Mants to my collection and sharing further.

We share our story about car towing. In this small villa in the town of Ossining Westchester County N.Y. As soon as the Latinos started to arrive the police chief opened checkpoints all over the strategic parts of the town to issue tickets to residents and visitors day and night. One of the residents try to expose it, but the televised meeting was shot down. A survey showed that the villa was making 2 million dollars per year only on tickets. We haven't looked on the total of cars that have been towed. There is no one to look into this matter, consequently the Chief of the Police, Judges and other politicians are free to do as they please.

The teacher Assistants in Ossining Westchester, New York has no Union representation, therefore, members of Unions are hand picked by school Administrators who choose them to cover up their deceits against the people they represent. In a small town like ours they can get away with it.There is no one to hear us as well. Many employees lost their jobs after been harassed, discriminated against, overworked, bulled. We the workers are finally overcoming our fear and we join the voices of the voiceless, thank you for your effort to share your stories with us.

I am very pleased to learn that a significant increase of Latino students are now enrolling in The CSU System and in record numbers. This is certainly a dream come true for many of my generation of Latino educators who, in my opinion, contributed enormously to this change that continues to be felt across the country. Also, we owe a lot to dedicated community based organizations like PIQUE whom educate parents about their fundamental rights and responsibilities in acquiring an opportunity for their kids to enroll in a college education.

Parents inherently understand the fundamental importance of providing support for their children access to a college or university, of their choice. Each year the Hispanic Scholarship Foundation's "Bill and Melinda Gates Millennium Scholarship" selects some of our country's best and brightest Latino students as models of success and leadership. They will certainly represent those who made it through the educational pathways and become the next generation of educated leaders in America.

As California reels from the greatest financial disaster in history, we will need to these youth to serve important roles in retooling our economy. The CSU has certainly reached out to the Latino community and, as a result, Latinos are participating in greater numbers in higher education. Yet, these efforts to educate parents about the importance of higher education and how to apply that knowledge effectively for their children success in higher education needs more support.

In spite of these gains, proposition 209 ,the landmark initiative that barred racial, ethnic, and gender preferences in public education will continue to isolate Latinos in The CSU system. Hopefully,it will be challenged and overturned to create greater access and equity to all of our best and brightest students in our country.

Unless dramatic cuts are made to social programs, education, and bloated bureaucracy, this state is clearly headed toward bankruptcy. Also corporate welfare has to end and the tax breaks should instead be focused at small growing businesses.

Whether you're relocating to Charlotte or any of our neighboring counties, you'll find there is a lot to like about this region. Charlotte's tremendous growth rate is reflected in the housing market which has been steadily growing for years, and yet still affordable compared to other housing markets in the nation.
