Soliciting proposals from qualified governmental entities and non-profit organizations to receive funding through the Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing Program.

WORKSHOPS FOR BUYING FORECLOSED HOMES IN ARIZONA

Who: Chandler City Council
What:

Workshops designed to familiarize residents with the city’s program to purchase foreclosed homes in the 85225 ZIP code and convert them into permanent affordable housing.

The City Council will use federal stimulus dollars to form a nonprofit land trust to purchase foreclosed homes. The trust will retain title to the land and the homeowners will purchase only the home itself. The program includes homeowner education and counseling services, and buyers may be eligible for down payment assistance.

PAYMENTS BEGIN FOR EXTENDED UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS IN FLORIDA

Who: Florida Agency for Workforce Innovation
What:

Distributing payments for Floridians who applied and are eligible for Extended Unemployment Compensation Benefits through the stimulus package. Payments will be retroactive to February 22, 2009 for eligible participants, providing up to $5,100 for some people. Individuals may receive up to $300 a week in extended benefits.

Eligibility Requirements:

To receive Extended Benefits individuals must:
-Be totally or partially unemployed;
-Not be eligible for unemployment compensation benefits in any other state;
-Be actively seeking work and provide search documentation for each week claimed;
-Not refuse an offer of suitable work or fail to apply for suitable work; and
-Exhaust all entitlement to regular and Emergency Unemployment Compensation after February 22, 2009
OR
-Exhaust all entitlement to regular and Emergency Unemployment Compensation benefits prior to February 22, 2009 and have established a claim benefit year that ends after February 22, 2009.

PROGRAM HELPS DISPLACED CONSTRUCTION WORKERS IN CALIFORNIA

Who: California Employment Development Department
What:

Funding has been awarded to nine grantees through the stimulus sponsored Construction Talent Transfer program to assist nearly 600 displaced residential construction workers transition to new jobs. The agencies will provide focused job training in areas including commercial concrete, metal stud framing, welding, electrical, drywall and many other trades marketable for commercial and public sector projects. Unemployed workers will also learn interview techniques, resume writing and job search skills as well as on-the-job training, computer proficiency and labor market information.

CALIFORNIA TO PROVIDE RESOURCES FOR AT-RISK YOUTH

Who: California Employment Development Department
What:

Funding has been awarded to three grantees through the stimulus sponsored California Gang Reduction, Intervention and Prevention Initiative to provide job training and education programs for 200 youth who are at risk of joining gangs or seeking to leave them. Job-related training includes skill building development in fields such as solar panel construction, building material recycling and hazardous waste handling. Many programs will offer paid work experience and job placement. Youth will also receive assistance including mental health services, counseling and courses for high school graduation or GED.
