REVIEW OF LOUISIANA’S WEATHERIZATION PLAN

Who: Louisiana Housing Finance Agency
What:

A public hearing to obtain comments on the 2009 Weatherization Assistance Program. Goals of the program are to increase energy efficient housing, minimize the impact of high energy costs, reduce utility bills and provide comfort and safety to low-income households throughout Louisiana.

FUNDING AVAILABLE TO ‘GO RED’ IN ARKANSAS

Who: The Arkansas Recovery Office and the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality
What:

Accepting applications from public, private or nonprofit organizations with eligible diesel equipment to receive funding through the stimulus funded Reduce Emissions from Diesels (RED) project.

Goals:

-To promote job creation or retention;
-To serve areas with the highest population densities or are in poor air quality areas;
-To maximize the useful life of certified engine configuration or verified technology; and
-To conserve diesel fuel or encourage the use of ultra low sulfur diesel in non-road diesel engines.

FUNDING AVAILABLE FOR DECONSTRUCTION WORK SERVICES AND TRAINING PROGRAMS IN CHICAGO

Who: City of Chicago Department of Community Development
What:

Soliciting proposals from qualified governmental entities and non-profit organizations to receive stimulus funding through the Deconstruction Work Services and Training Program.

Goals:

-To help formerly incarcerated individuals gain skills, work experience and earn wages by participating in building deconstruction activities;
-To design a one year paid work training program that instructs students in safety, tool usage, and deconstruction techniques; and
-To provide work for a total of 140 participants during the 2 and a half year grant cycle.

FUNDING AVAILABLE FOR PATHWAYS OUT OF POVERTY PROGRAM

Who: U.S. Department of Labor
What:

Accepting applications from local nonprofit entities and national nonprofit entities with networks of local affiliates, coalition members, or other established partners to receive funding through the stimulus-funded Pathways Out of Poverty Program.

Goals:

-To target services to unemployed individuals, high school dropouts, individuals with a criminal record and disadvantaged individuals living in high areas of poverty;
-To provide sound recruitment and referral strategies;
-To integrate basic skills and work-readiness training with occupational skills training;
-To combine supportive services with training services to help participants overcome barriers to employment; and
-To provide training services at times and locations that are easily accessible to targeted populations.

UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS EXTENDED IN ALABAMA

Who: Alabama State Lawmakers
What:

A bill was passed to extend unemployment compensation payments for as long as 20 weeks for people whose 59 weeks of benefits expired or will expire on or after February 1 – December 31 this year.

Eligibility:

State officials will mail notices to eligible unemployed workers by August 28, 2009.

This survey conducted by the American Association of School Administrators finds that while school systems around the nation appreciate the opportunity the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funding represents, a lack of flexibility in the funding and the use of the money to backfill federal, state and local budget holes have limited the ability of districts to implement innovative reforms and changes.
