A large chunk of the nearly $22 million in funding to spur retraining and hiring of displaced workers is being released through the South Florida Workforce Investment Board.
“We, as community messengers, didn’t know how to cover it so people didn’t even know about it,” said NAM executive director Sandy Close. “There was no advertising money in the stimulus, so people didn’t know.”.
Phoenix this week began spending its $6.9 million share to help residents pay for things like rent, utility bills, gas and groceries. That grant is expected to aid 1,400 Phoenix families over the next three years.
