In an effort to continue to track the distribution of federal funds allocated by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the Equal Voice for America's Families Coalition will send out updates about upcoming hearings, public actions, requests for proposals, updates and resources regarding expenditure and allocation of stimulus dollars at the state level.

FUNDING AVAILABLE FOR THE SELF-SUFFICIENCY PROGRAM IN MISSISSIPPI

Who: Mississippi Department of Employment Security
What:

Accepting proposals to provide job skills training, career track training and business development training for unemployed low-income adults in the Mississippi Delta through the Self-Sufficiency Program.

Goals:

-To promote essential life skills;
-To help participants from the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program reach a level of self-sufficiency;
-To expand the target group’s access to higher educational purposes; and
-To implement strategies to meet long term needs for trained workers in demand occupations with career advancement opportunities.

FUNDING AVAILABLE FOR SKILLS TRAINING IN MISSISSIPPI

Who: Mississippi Department of Employment Security
What:

Accepting proposals for a program that will promote recruitment and training in vocational and technical fields. The program should utilize innovative techniques to reach parents, counselors and youth.

Goals:

-To promote strategic approaches that build partnerships between businesses, training providers, community organizations and other key stakeholders;
-To promote strategies that enable low-income displaced and under-skilled adults acquire the knowledge and skills for success;
-To promote vocational and technical career paths in high schools;
-To connect employers to job creation opportunities; and
-To increase enrollment of graduating trainees attending short term certification courses in vocational and technical career paths.

Accepting proposals for a program that promotes a career in construction among disadvantage and/or at-risk youth.

Goals:

-To stimulate interest among youth in construction trades as a career;
-To improve target group’s interpersonal and employability skills;
-To increase the likelihood of successful job searches and/or college successes;
-To increase the number of participants in the target group that earn a diploma or GED; and
-To utilize innovative learning techniques as well as hands-on training.

Goals: To reduce the incidence of homeless by assisting homeless individuals and families move to self-sufficiency and permanent housing.

FUNDING AVAILABLE FOR THE COMMUNITIES PUTTING PREVENTION TO WORK INITIATIVE

Who: Department of Health and Human Services
What:

Accepting proposals to utilize the $373 million in stimulus funds to create healthier communities through sustainable, proven, population-based approaches such as broad-based policy, systems, organizational and environmental changes in communities and schools.

Goals: To support intensive community approaches to chronic disease prevention to achieve the following prevention outcomes:
-Increased levels of physical activity;
-Improved nutrition;
-Decreased overweight/obesity prevalence;
-Decreased smoking prevalence and decreased teen smoking initiation; and
-Decreased exposure to secondhand smoke.
