In an effort to continue to track the distribution of federal funds allocated by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the Equal Voice for America's Families Coalition will send out updates about upcoming hearings, public actions, requests for proposals, updates and resources regarding expenditure and allocation of stimulus dollars at the state level.

FUNDING AVAILABLE FOR FAST TRACK SKILLS TRAINING PROGRAM IN MISSISSIPPI

Who: Mississippi Department of Employment Security
What:

Seeking proposals for a program that will rapidly train and place dislocated workers, low-income individuals, offenders and veterans in advanced manufacturing and green jobs.

Goals:

To utilize innovative techniques to train and place disadvantaged workers into higher paying jobs in a very short time period;
-To focus on the emerging green jobs sector and advanced manufacturing;
-To provide each trainee with an individualized career path to guide the transition to continued career advancement; and
-To promote sector strategies that enable low-income, displaced and under-skilled adults to acquire the knowledge and skills for success in high-growth industry.

FUNDING AVAILABLE FOR ON THE JOB PROBLEM SOLVING PROGRAM IN MISSISSIPPI

Who: Mississippi Department of Employment Security
What:

Seeking proposals for a program that enhances on the job problem solving skills.

Goals -To develop enhanced problem solving skills at all levels of the workplace from entry level to advanced level;
-To utilize a combination of traditional classroom instruction with interactive class exercises;
-To shorten the time between training, application and achieving return on investment; and
-To have a positive impact on the retention and advancement of incumbent workers.

Goals:

-To promote strategic approaches that build partnerships between businesses, training providers, community organizations and other key stakeholders;
-To promote strategies that enable low-income displaced and under-skilled adults acquire the knowledge and skills for success;
-To promote vocational and technical career paths in high schools;
-To connect employers to job creation opportunities; and
-To increase enrollment of graduating trainees attending short term certification courses in vocational and technical career paths.

-To improve target group’s interpersonal and employability skills;
-To increase the likelihood of successful job searches and/or college successes;
-To increase the number of participants in the target group that earn a diploma or GED; and
-To utilize innovative learning techniques as well as hands-on training.

Goals: To reduce the incidence of homeless by assisting homeless individuals and families move to self-sufficiency and permanent housing.

FUNDING AVAILABLE FOR THE COMMUNITIES PUTTING PREVENTION TO WORK INITIATIVE

Who: Department of Health and Human Services
What:

Accepting proposals to utilize the $373 million in stimulus funds to create healthier communities through sustainable, proven, population-based approaches such as broad-based policy, systems, organizational and environmental changes in communities and schools.

Goals: To support intensive community approaches to chronic disease prevention to achieve the following prevention outcomes:
-Increased levels of physical activity;
-Improved nutrition;
-Decreased overweight/obesity prevalence;
-Decreased smoking prevalence and decreased teen smoking initiation; and
-Decreased exposure to secondhand smoke.

STIMULUS FUNDS HELP SACRAMENTO COUNTY JOB SEEKERS

Who: Sacramento County Department of Human Assistance
What:

The Job Opportunity Program, a yearlong project partnering the agency and local businesses. The agency will pre-screen applicants for local businesses and pay 80 percent of the worker’s wages. Employees in the program work for up to six months with the goal of being hired permanently; meanwhile, participants build up work experience, earn income and increase their chances of finding other employment.

ILLINOIS FUNDS FOR WEATHERIZATION INCREASED BY $242 MILLION

Who: Governor Pat Quinn's Office
What:

Funding through the Illinois Home Weatherization Assistance Program has been increased by $242 million for low-income families to reduce heating and cooling costs by improving the energy efficiency of their homes. Measures may include: weather-stripping and caulking; insulating attics and walls; furnace work; repairing windows and doors; and replacing windows, if needed.
