In an effort to continue to track the distribution of federal funds allocated by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the Equal Voice for America's Families Coalition will send out updates about upcoming hearings, public actions, requests for proposals, updates and resources regarding expenditure and allocation of stimulus dollars at the state level.

FUNDING AVAILABLE FOR ENERGY EFFICIENCY AND CONSERVATION – CALIFORNIA SMALL CITY AND COUNTY GRANT PROGRAM

Who: California Energy Commission
What:

Soliciting applications for the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant program designed to provide small cities and counties funding to install eligible cost-effective energy efficiency equipment to improve current infrastructure.

Goals:

-To increase energy efficiency.

Federal Requests for Proposals

FUNDING AVAILABLE FOR THE COMMUNITIES PUTTING PREVENTION TO WORK INITIATIVE

Who: Department of Health and Human Services
What:

Accepting proposals to utilize the $373 million in stimulus funds to create healthier communities through sustainable, proven, population-based approaches such as broad-based policy, systems, organizational and environmental changes in communities and schools.

Goals To support intensive community approaches to chronic disease prevention to achieve the following prevention outcomes:
-Increased levels of physical activity;
-Improved nutrition;
-Decreased overweight/obesity prevalence;
-Decreased smoking prevalence and decreased teen smoking initiation; and
-Decreased exposure to secondhand smoke.
How to apply:

Applicants can apply online utilizing the forms and instructions posted on the official Federal agency wide E-grant website.

REVISED APPLICATION GUIDELINES POSTED FOR ‘RACE TO THE TOP’ FUND

Who: Department of Education
What:

Accepting proposals to utilize the $4 billion available to states in competitive grant dollars through the Race to the Top fund.

Goals:

- To adopt standards and assessments that prepare students to succeed in college and the workplace and to compete in the global economy;
-To build data systems that measure student growth and success, and inform teachers and principals about how they can improve instruction;
-To recruit, develop, reward and retain effective teachers and principals, especially where they are needed most; and
-To turn around our lowest-achieving schools.

CALIFORNIA PREPARES FINAL APPLICATION FOR ‘RACE TO THE TOP’ FUNDING

What:

Presentations to review the final application from the state of California to apply for the ‘Race for the Top’ competitive grant funds. Topics of discussion include: changes in eligibility requirements, competitive criteria, the overall structure and level of funding in the competitive grant programs, the extent to which comments submitted to the U.S. Department of Education were incorporated, and final timelines for applications, awards and implementation.

What:

Hosting a web page to provide information about Mississippi's project implementation and to reduce the period of time for publication and bid openings for any construction projects under the Federal Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

ENERGY$MART PROGRAM HELPS KEEP NEW MEXICANS WARM

Who: New Mexico Mortgage Finance Authority
What:

Funding is available for low-income families to weatherize their homes by installing measures that cut energy costs. Measures may include: weather-stripping and caulking around doors and windows; replacing broken glass panes or windows; installing insulation, including on water heaters and in attics; tuning up, repairing, or replacing the furnace or heating unit; installing carbon monoxide detectors; replacing incandescent bulbs with CFL’s; or replacing a high-energy consuming refrigerator with an energy-efficient one.

How to apply:

Individuals and families making up to 200% of the federal poverty guidelines or about $44,100 a year for a family of four are eligible for this program.
